Portoviejo is a city with more than 480 years of history, and since its inception has been forged as a cultural city. It has always excelled in literature, music, dance, painting and other arts, achieving significant recognition nationally and globally.
As the film is concerned, Portoviejo has been an important development in the training of audiovisual citizenship for more than four decades, when they worked more than 8 cinemas in the city, getting great call in every function that was presented. However, the advent of new audiovisual technology and home video stores , made people lose interest in attending the theaters, and prefer to watch movies from the comfort of home. Generating the disappearance of cinemas and therefore local distributors. For this reason the film movement declined noticeably, slowly losing the tradition of cinema, and therefore memory, weakening the common imagination of portovejenses.
This gap in the exhibition of films, was quickly exploited by a company that monopolized the service, and also from its beginnings in the city has spent a large percentage of purely commercial cinema. Do not give room for the independent film, the auteur cinema Latin American cinema, art cinema, cinema of reflection, much less the Ecuadorian film, and when they do sample conditions are quite favorable. His interest has always focused on the largest collection of money at the box office, but not to the proper training of a true cinephile public.
For all these reasons, such as cultural managers committed to the city, we have developed a project to be the alternative to this unfortunate reality, in order to recreate an environment for training, learning and entertainment.
The purpose of this project that seeks to rescue this interest in film art, creating a space where different and innovative projects proposed, ranging from classic to contemporary, taking into account all types of cinema all around the world, putting the films made in Ecuador, seeking the full participation attendees at each screening, generating dialogue, raising new ideas and new ways of seeing the world. All this can only be possible through the CINEMA CLUB.
